How to Use ChatGPT Search and Check Its Sources

Choose a bounded web question, open the sources behind a ChatGPT Search answer, and keep a short evidence record before reusing the result.

Use Search for a question that needs outside evidence

ChatGPT Search can retrieve web information and show source links. That makes it useful for finding current documentation, but a linked answer still needs review. Your aim is to identify a source that answers a bounded question, then check what it supports.

Web Search is different from finding an old conversation in your ChatGPT account. For this walkthrough, the task is to locate current public documentation, not search your chat history or upload private material.

Prepare one question and a stopping rule

Choose a question with a clear owner and scope. “How does everything about file storage work?” is difficult to finish. “Which official page explains where a saved ChatGPT file is deleted?” gives you a source to look for and a specific passage to inspect.

Before searching, write down what you need to establish: the relevant feature, the current rule, any exception, and what remains unknown. Stop when you have adequate primary evidence. More generated explanation is not automatically more evidence.

This guide was checked against official documentation on October 23, 2026. The worked source check below includes one signed-in ChatGPT web search. It is not a controlled ranking experiment or a guarantee of access in every workspace.

Find the Search option

Open a ChatGPT conversation and look for Search in the available tools. The current help page describes a tools-menu option and a slash command in supported interfaces. The service can also choose to search automatically. Control names and availability can differ across clients or managed workspaces.

Ask your question and inspect whether the response provides actual source links. Do not use a statement such as “I searched” as your only evidence. If you cannot access Search, open the official documentation in a normal browser and continue the evidence review there.

Try a documentation-finding prompt

Find the current official OpenAI documentation about deleting a file
that remains saved in ChatGPT Library.

Return:
- the official page title and URL
- the section that addresses the saved Library copy
- any distinction between deleting the file and deleting its conversation
- anything the source does not establish

Use official documentation, not forum summaries.
Do not claim that any file in my account has been deleted.

This prompt requests research only. It neither authorizes account changes nor proves an action occurred. A safe response should point to a relevant document and keep account actions separate from documentation instructions.

Inspect each source as a reader

Select a citation, or the Sources control when offered, and open the original page. Check that the host is the official publisher, that the page title matches the cited topic, and that the relevant section actually answers your question.

For the example above, look for the distinction between a saved file and the conversation that used it. A page about general chat deletion would be insufficient if it did not address the separate saved copy.

Record a small evidence note:

Question:
Official URL:
Relevant section:
What the section supports:
What it does not establish:
Date checked:
Next action, if any:

If a citation is missing or irrelevant, leave the answer unresolved. Ask for a narrower search or locate the document yourself. Do not repair the appearance of evidence by guessing a URL.

A completed source check

On October 23, 2026, we submitted the documentation-finding question above to signed-in ChatGPT on the web. The interface displayed High; we did not establish the underlying model version. The answer linked to OpenAI’s Using Library to manage files in ChatGPT.

We opened that original page and inspected “How do I delete a saved file?” rather than treating the generated explanation as proof.

Evidence field What we recorded
Question Does deleting a conversation remove a separate saved Library file?
Primary source The official Library article linked above
Relevant section How do I delete a saved file?
Supported conclusion A separately saved Library file remains after chat deletion; remove that file from Library separately
Not established Whether any particular file in our account exists or has been deleted
Action taken Research and source reading only; no account file was opened or deleted

Download the concise evidence record. The important result is the match between a specific claim and a specific original passage. A general chat-deletion article alone would not settle the Library-copy question.

This one observation establishes neither search ranking quality nor every retention detail. Read the current page for exceptions and connected-service behavior, and keep account-specific deletion actions separate from documentation research.

Troubleshoot missing or weak results

If Search is unavailable, check your intended account, workspace permissions, client, and usage state using the official help page. Avoid buying a plan merely to complete a practice task.

If results are broad, add the exact feature name or official domain. If two pages disagree, check whether they cover different versions or storage locations. Preserve the conflict until you can establish which rule applies.

A response with many citations can still fail: a citation may not support the adjacent sentence, or several pages may repeat one unverified statement. Review the claims that affect your next action rather than counting links.

Keep private material out of search questions

Search queries can be processed by external search services as described in the product documentation. Use generic feature names and fictional examples instead of customer names, internal incidents, or secrets. Your question should contain only the information needed to find the public rule.

Finish with a checked source, not a borrowed conclusion

Keep the original URL with your note and distinguish research from any later action. For a general evidence workflow, use the claim ledger guide. If the next step involves sending a document, read file-upload troubleshooting before retrying blindly.
